He has this kind of shambolic confidence to him. I had these three images in my trailer-one was Einstein with his tongue out, another was James Dean, because Stephen is just effortlessly cool. You could still see the mischief in him, the glint in his eye. He can still move, but it was a very specific physicality. The illness has really taken hold of his physicality. It’s the only footage I could find of Stephen speaking, and he’s almost incomprehensible. There was one documentary of Stephen and Jane from the 1980s. LAWRENCE: I know! And I just came up with it, too. What was your most helpful tool? Was it the Stephen documentaries? Every time I’m at a premiere, all I’m doing is thinking, “Oh, you shouldn’t have said it like that!” Actually, it would probably just make me neurotic. LAWRENCE: Maybe watching dailies would make me better. I kept hoping that the two things were going to meet, but obviously they never did. I had an iPad with all the documentary footage of Stephen and then we had the dailies. REDMAYNE: We sort of had to, because we were jumping in and out of all these different time periods and trying to track the illness and the physical decline. But, oh my God, did you watch rushes of this? Unless I keep getting the same note and I’m obviously not getting it, then I’ll watch it again on the monitor. Our extraordinary makeup artist, Jan, and costume designer, Steven, did clever things like making the collars tight and my makeup look healthy in the morning, and then, if in the afternoon I was playing him older, they would mess with proportions-the collars would become bigger or they would use slightly oversized wheelchairs. But we couldn’t shoot chronologically, so we were having to jump between different time periods within the same day. With the disease, Stephen did lose a lot of weight. REDMAYNE: I lost, like, 15 pounds at the beginning of the film. LAWRENCE: It looked like you lost a lot of weight. I’m entirely fueled by fear, so the fact that I knew it could be a catastrophic disaster made me unable to sleep, and made me work quite hard. REDMAYNE: Are you kidding me? I’m just one gigantic ball of rancid fear and self-consciousness. LAWRENCE: I don’t know if you get this, but I get embarrassed really easily when I have to have big meltdown scenes. And then you get offered the job, and you have a moment of euphoria, and then you basically want to be sick for the first year. REDMAYNE: You do that thing of trying to chase down the job, sounding incredibly confident because you never think you’ll get it. LAWRENCE: That would scare the shit out of me. When I was cast, my mate Charlie Cox, who plays Jonathan in the film, said, “If you get the opportunity to play Stephen Hawking, you have no option but to give it your everything. You were so fantastic! I didn’t even know some of that was possible.ĮDDIE REDMAYNE: Well, thank you. JENNIFER LAWRENCE: I watched The Theory of Everything with my jaw dropped the entire time. Fresh off her worldwide press tour for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, the Oscar winner called Redmayne, who was in Turin, Italy, to talk about running on fear, Real Housewives addiction, fake falls, and bad salmon. Jennifer Lawrence, who knows a bit about sci-fi, met Redmayne years ago through director Oliver Stone. This month, Redmayne will again aim for the heavens, in the Wachowskis’ space opera Jupiter Ascending, donning some serious mascara in the process to play an extra-planetary villain. But if Redmayne’s early work showed that he could be an engaging performer, his recent work (including Tom Hooper’s starry 2012 production of Les Misérables, in which the actor stormed the barricades as the romantic Marius) showed him to be as ambitious as he is talented. Or at least an Oscar.īorn in London in 1982 and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied art history, Redmayne came up with some dynamic and swoon-worthy roles in lush period pieces such as Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), Robert De Niro’s CIA saga The Good Shepherd, and the epic 2010 miniseries The Pillars of the Earth. There’s an old saying, the kind you might find in the office of a high school guidance counselor, that goes something like, “Shoot for the moon, and even if you miss, you’ll end up among the stars.” Eddie Redmayne is an actor already on the rise, but with his performance as a young Stephen Hawking in search of the secrets of the universe in this past fall’s The Theory of Everything, he shot past the moon and may well end up with interstellar stardom. I’m just one gigantic ball of rancid fear and self-consciousness.

What has been striking to this casual, and often thirsty, observer is how people at these outdoor tables seem to be so intently talking to one another, from mid-morning to well after midnight, face to face, pairs of argumentative old men, dewy-eyed young couples or large groups, seldom looking at their iPhones - though they all have them.Īlso, the sight of someone sitting alone at a cafe table working on a laptop for hours on end is rare. In the United States, where we try a lot harder to control consumption, it’s almost 14%. The rate of alcoholism/problem drinking in France, Portugal and much of Western Europe, according to the World Population Review, is less than 9%. To concerns that we don’t want our Main Street an open saloon, I’d answer that when drinking is normal, and associated with food and fellowship rather than furtive rule-bending, it is much less of a hazard. It’s impossible to imagine the pedestrian plazas of Rouen or Bordeaux without wine and beer from 10 a.m. One impediment to such success might be Utah’s overly restrictive liquor laws. Salt Lake City, Park City and Ogden, among others, should have more of them. Because they won’t.īut after a few months knocking around several cities in France and, now, one in Portugal, I will offer my testimony that city streets that focus on people who walk, eat, drink and shop are a great thing. Mendenhall has not gone so far as to claim that her plans will rival the City of Light. Now another mayor, Erin Mendenhall, has plans to turn another stretch of Main Street into a pedestrian-centered, retail- and restaurant-friendly plaza that is more in the nature of how cities work in Europe and, increasingly, the United States. Perhaps the sweetest surprise on that list? Dark chocolate at 70 to 85 percent cocoa comes in at about 65 milligrams (mg) of magnesium per ounce, notes the U.S. The Cleveland Clinic cites a breadth of foods with ample amounts of magnesium, from pumpkin seeds and spinach to avocados and brown rice. Previous research has noted, for example, that magnesium helps lymphocytes bind to invaders so they can be removed from the body, and helps prevent antibodies from being impaired. Palinski-Wade notes that magnesium plays an important role by improving how each of these protein types function. Your immune system is made up of numerous components, including proteins like antibodies, lymphocytes, and macrophages, which all work together to repel invaders, such as viruses. Plenty of vitamins and minerals play a role in immune function, but a particular standout is magnesium, according to a 2022 study. Examples include 1 ounce (oz) of dark meat chicken with the skin removed, 1 oz of roast beef, and low-fat cheese that has a maximum of 3 g of fat per oz. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, lean protein has 55 calories and 2 to 3 g of fat per serving. (To convert to kg, divide weight in pounds by 2.2.) For example, a 150-pound person weighs about 68.2 kg, meaning they need about 54.5 g of protein each day.įor the most heart-healthy option, choose lean protein. She notes that the recommended daily allowance (or minimum amount needed) for protein is 0.8 grams (g) per kilogram (kg) of body weight. Whether you get your protein from lean meats or vegan or vegetarian foods such as tempeh or tofu (note, however, that vegans can become deficient in zinc and may require supplementation), make sure you get some at every meal to keep your energy and your strength up, advises McKenzie Caldwell, MPH, RDN, of Charlotte, North Carolina. Certain types of immune cells, including white blood cells, can’t function without zinc, according to a study review. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) notes that zinc - a mineral abundant in meats like oysters, poultry, seafood, beef, and lamb - works with the protein found in meat to strengthen the immune system. Within months of leaving, she became the new owner of Dream Body Recovery in Miami, which has three rooms that can accommodate up to six clients. Wright chose one of the recovery houses, and had such a positive experience that she decided to start a similar business of her own. But on Instagram she found a world of recovery houses - many of them decorated in a millennial pink, hyperfeminine aesthetic - where she would be healing alongside other women who had just gone through the same procedure and would be cared for by a team of women who would cook for her, dress her wounds and monitor her progress until she was well enough to catch a flight back home to Atlanta. She could go it alone and rent a hotel room where she could convalesce in private and sustain herself on room service. The outpatient facilities to which hospitals sometimes refer people, which can be costly, were out of the question. “I could not present myself anywhere in the body that I was in.” After her surgery, she needed somewhere to stay and be cared for during the first two weeks, the most painful part of the recovery period. “She changed my life,” Wright said about her surgeon, bringing a finger to the inner corner of her eye to catch a tear. For Wright, getting the surgeries alleviated the insecurity she felt about her body after having two children. She underwent the same procedure a year before, traveling from Atlanta, where she lived, to Miami, where the prices were lower and the options were abundant. When Randi Wright got a Brazilian butt lift in 2020 - a complex surgery in which fat is liposuctioned from the abdomen or lower back or other fleshy parts and used to enlarge and shape the buttocks - she knew she couldn’t afford the most expensive post-op care. To begin a new rip, the program asks you to choose a source, which can be a single video file, a folder of files, or the DVD directly. Then restart Handbrake, and now it should be able to rip a DVD encrypted with CSS. The libdvdcss-2.dll can decrypt DVDs encrypted with a type of copy protection called Content Scramble System (CSS).ĭownload the file and copy it to the C:\Program Files\Handbrake folder. VideoLAN offers the excellent VLC Media Player software. You should be able to locate it on a few different websites, such as the VideoLAN download index. For that, you will need to get a little help from the web.įind a file online called libdvdcss-2.dll. Handbrake can rip your personal videos, but does not support the removal of copy protection. Handbrake is a free program for Windows, macOS, and Linux, but it's a bit more complicated than WinX DVD Ripper. I have yet to experience the same technical issues and customer service has been quick and thorough on the occasions I have contacted them. However, my experience has been quite positive after using the program for years. One PCMag reader ran into technical issues with WinX DVD, and Digiarty Software’s customer service was slow to respond and issue a refund. After the process is finished, double-click the digital file to view the video. Next, choose the destination folder for the video file and then click Run. You can select from MP4 video, AVI video, WMV video, MOV video, and smaller formats for iOS and Android devices. The program can handle individual video files as well as folders on a DVD.Ĭlick on another button to choose the output. First, click on one button to load the DVD. The simple interface prompts you to perform the rip in three basic steps. Unlike some DVD rippers, WinX DVD is easy to use. With the paid version, I was able to successfully and easily rip DVDs from both my own home videos as well as from copy-protected ones. To rip longer videos and copy-protected DVDs, you'll need to plunk down $39.95 for the full version, though at least you can try before you buy. You can't rip a video longer than five minutes and you can't rip copy-protected discs. Offered by Digiarty Software, WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is available as a free trial version but with certain limitations. However, the feds aren’t likely to come knocking on your door if you restrict the copies to your own personal use. After all, you’re bypassing the copy protection. Ripping copy-protected DVDs for personal use is still technically illegal in the United States, whether you’re just backing them up or viewing them on a computer or mobile device. You can certainly legally rip your own personal videos, but it is illegal to rip commercial, copyrighted, copy-protected videos with the intent to resell or share the copies. If you want more speed and advanced features, consider a paid program, such as WinX DVD Ripper or WonderFox DVD Ripper. Certain ones try to install unwanted extra software and, in some cases, malware. Your best bet for ripping DVDs and Blu-rays is to start with a reliable and free program, such as Handbrake or VLC Media Player. A good program should also let you rip discs to a variety of file formats, such as MP4s, AVIs, WMVs, and MOVs, and even more compact formats designed for mobile devices. That latter option means you'll be able to rip files stored in those VIDEO_TS folders you often find on DVDs. Ideally, you want a program that can rip digital files from any source accessible from a DVD, including the disc itself, an ISO image, or folders of DVD files. If you want to rip your DVDs into digital files that you can play and even edit, without relying on the discs, there are a host of free and paid tools that can help you in this endeavor. They may be movies or TV shows you've purchased or home movies. You have a collection of DVDs that you want stored on your computer or mobile device. It surpassed $1.2 billion in total spending by 2007, three years after development began.Īccording to NASA budget documents, the project has cost about $10 billion through the 2021 fiscal year. The Webb telescope was initially given a $1 billion total budget with a projected launch date of 2010. How did the budget for the James Webb Space Telescope change over time? This is the same process used for conducting research with the Hubble Space Telescope and other space and ground-based observatories. In addition to NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency already are conducting research with the Webb telescope. A team of other scientists review, rank, and select which proposals get access. While NASA was responsible for building the telescope, it’s considered a “General Observatory,” meaning scientists can make research proposals for using the telescope. The telescope will spend the remainder of its time taking images of deep space, using devices that capture infrared light, which isn’t observable by humans with the naked eye. Other goals for the project are observing the formation of stars from their early stages and investigating whether distant planets have the potential for life. It can also help determine how galaxies evolved after they formed. So when researchers use the telescope, they’re essentially looking backwards in time, to some of the earliest periods of our universe.Īccording to NASA, the telescope will help scientists search for the first galaxies formed after the creation of the universe. Light from these distant objects takes thousands of years to reach Earth. These features give it the ability to look deeper into space. The James Webb Space Telescope is a “large, space-based observatory.” Considered a successor or expansion on the Hubble Space Telescope, the Webb telescope is more sensitive than Hubble and is optimized for infrared light. What does the James Webb Space Telescope do? It's possible that Bastion was built without this concept(they are the only bastion omnic left, while most of the other omnics we have seen in game and in cinematics were clearly non-combat omnics), or has been isolated enough from post-Omnic-Crisis Omnic society that they haven't been exposed to the concept of gender. I wonder if my brothers and sisters will be pleased to see me.įrom this, was can assume that at least some omnics were either built with the concept of gender, or adopted it after them Omnic Crisis. Zenyatta: I have not returned here for many years. Mondatta was an inspiration to me.Īnd omnic monks at Nepal are referred to with gendered words It's an honor to meet a member of the Shambali. My brother, Mondatta, did much to improve their lives, but it was not to be. Genji: Does the suffering of the omnics here trouble you, Master? But making a robot-human couple is more of a commentary on existing interracial relationships that comes at the expense of actually treating omnics as AI rather than reskinned people. Now, it lets them use robots as metaphors for existing social issues, which is fine and another issue entirely. So when they make them a couple, and make the omnics wear human fashions, and otherwise just swap out metal character models for human ones in scenes without actually changing what's going on, they're not "raising more questions" - they're deliberately avoiding the actually thorny questions about how we should deal with the alienness of a sentient intelligence that is fundamentally inhuman. That's not really raising questions, that's setting the stage for a trope laden drama. The bad guys think they don't, the good guys think they do. Overwatch is no different - it just hits you over the head with 'of course they deserve equal treatment'. It ends up meaning that the question of whether AI is morally "alive" is treated as completely resolved, something a lot of scifi tends towards. They're basically human with human desires, so of course there is a moral imperative to treat them as such. It takes the 'otherness' out of AI by making them essentially human, and in doing so removes any real moral trickiness. It lets the fiction delve into the "edgy interesting questions" - but those questions always just seem to end up being new versions of normal human problems. All the same strengths, weaknesses, personality foibles, desires, etc. I think it's a total cop-out when they make them "basically human, but with metal bodies". I actually think it makes it a lot less topical and compelling.Ī lot of scifi deals with the huge moral questions surrounding sentient AI. It's more compelling and topical sci-fi if they're banging. But probably it was just easy, if your word for woman takes one form and your word for man takes another it's just a very straightforward way to start talking about words. No one is quite sure why it ended up being gender, there are even languages where the word for girl is masculine and weird stuff like that. It's just a way of describing and categorizing the different forms of words in the language. Now this is an imprecise comparison, if you really want to get a sense of it you need to study a language that has gender. And the ones that add nothing are "feminine nouns" and the ones that do the weird 'o' thing are called "neuter". Like if all nouns that were pluralized with an added "s" were called "masculine nouns", just because. You know how there are some words that pluralize in different ways? Like "bear" becomes "bears" but "dead" becomes "dead" and "goose" becomes "geese"? Well imagine if all those different kinds of nouns had a name. Like, I assume you're a native English speaker. It's more like there are just different kinds of words. Like they aren't being identified as a boy or a girl like a person would be. The Note Air is way thinner, has a better processor, is using DDR4X memory, although it has 3GB, while the Note 2 had 4GB of DDR4. There is a software switch to lock the orientation, so it won’t always flip around, if it bothers you. You can switch the orientation 360 degrees, by just moving your tablet from portrait to landscape mode. This is the first Onyx product that I am aware of that has this technology. One of the most underrated things about the Air, is the gyroscope. The dimensions are 229mm by 195.4mm by 5.8mm and weighs 420g. It is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery and you can surf the internet with Wi-Fi (2.4GHz + 5GHz). You can charge and transfer data with the USB-C port, which also has OTG. It also has a built-in speaker if you don’t feel like plugging in extra accessories. It has Bluetooth 5.0 to connect up wireless accessories, such as headphones or a speaker to listen audiobooks, music or podcasts. Underneath the hood of the Note Air is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The Lamy Al-Star EMR Wacom pen is likely the best of the bunch, is also made of aluminum. The iReader X-Pen is made of aluminum and has tremendous build quality. If you find yourself buying the Note Air and do not like the stock stylus, there are alternatives available. Although the nibs will be replaceable, Onyx told Good e-Reader that the replacements will not be available until the end of October. One of the downsides of this pen is that it does not have an eraser. The stylus has a magnet inside of it, so it will snap to the edge of the Air. The pen is black with a hexagonal design, I found it is easier to hold for longer writing sessions than the stock pen that the Onyx Boox Max Lumi ships with. Onyx has designed on all new pen for the Air, that is unlike anything they have ever released before. The screen has a WACOM layer, this is critical for the note taking functionality. This system is designed so you can read at night or lowlight environments, and adjust the illimnosity via a software based slider bar. There are 18 white LED lights, and 18 amber LED lights, for a total 36 LED lights. Like many 10.3 inch e-notes on the market, this employs a front-lit display with both white and amber LED lights. This is a very interesting industrial design, something that Onyx has never really done before. The front is piano black and the right hand side of the screen is blue, with an orange Onyx logo. The front of the device almost has a dual bezel system. All of the other sides are clean and have no ports or anything else. On the side is your speaker, power button and USB-C port. The back is made of a blue brushed aluminum and has an orange racing stripe on the side, the Onyx logo is the same color. The screen made of glass and it is flush with the bezel. The Note Air features a 10.3 inch E INK Carta HD Display with a resolution of 1872×1404 and 227 PPI. There is also a slew of new pen/pencil types to shade, highlight and really flex your inner artist. One of the big improvements that Onyx to the software is including layers, a similar system to Remarkable. Android 10 is the major selling point and you can also run two apps at the same time, you download apps from Google Play. It features an all new asymmetrical design and has a very fast Snapdragon processor and tons of storage. The Onyx Boox Note Air is one of the most intriguing new digital note taking device of 2020. The biggest tip is to use the shift-consolidate feature. I contributed 90,000 to that, my allies brought that up to about 170,000 and my tech/morale advantage started wrecking the smaller OPM armies fighting with Austria and making them drop out. The biggest battle we fought was in Ravensburg and was around 400,000 soldiers combined. Of course, I took on a lot of debt too, but I have a much stronger economy and was able to pay off all but 4 of my loans. I've been keeping an eye on their replenishment and they must not have taken Quantity because after 8 years of peace I'm back up to about 80% manpower and they're around 40% or so. We'd already had a series of brief border skirmishes and proxy wars (declaring on an ally of theirs to get at the main target) and finally it was just time to duke it out.Īfter I beat them and took five of their provinces, apparently that was enough to trigger a coalition against me and I had to release three of those provinces as independent nations, but I accomplished my goals in the end to drive Austria into bankruptcy and completely depleted their manpower. The time finally came where we were two of the superpowers and they were directly threatening my expansion into Central Europe and when I saw that Austria was swallowing the OPMs, it was time to rumble because both of us were getting too big. I had taken all of traditional France and Austria had allied with Poland and was eating the OPMs one by one. I would have lost if I hadn't gotten creative with mercenaries to distract some of the Austrian mega stacks as well as scorching my provinces with forts so the attacking armies took ludicrous attrition.īy the time I captured Vienna, I had about 20,000 manpower left and every country attacking me had 0. I matched Austria for manpower give or take 5,000 and when you counted the manpower of the OPMs, I was outnumbered by about 50,000. Last night, I had a massive 70 year long war against Austria and 10 other minor countries in the HRE as France. What I've done is keep a standing army at my max land forcelimit and station them on forts in preferential terrain and play defense while I send groups of mercs out to attack and raid, letting my enemy wear themselves out fighting mercenaries so when they get to my regular troops and forts they're hurting. Until you're able to capture more territory, take Administration or Offensive ideas, both of which give -25% mercenary costs. Also try improving your provinces with military points - each point gives you another 250 manpower. This immediately gives you 50% more manpower, and the ideas in that group really benefit you.
